How can a device be released to the public when it has clearly not been tested? How can it take so long to resolve an issue like this when it occurs? And once such an issue is found, why are people not informed that there's a firmware update available for their modem? I only found out by braving phone support again, and even at that had to ring back when I was disconnected. Whether it'll fix the issue with my router not recognising the USB stick remains to be seen.

This firmware upgrade should fix the RAS 608 error I'm getting, although I'm not sure it'll fix the error you are getting - worth a shot though. Anyway I spoke to a helpful guy in VF today which was refreshing after speaking to a few people who clearly knew not a lot. I have the instructions to do it and am to receive the actual upgrade program on CD in the post (why they can't just put the damn thing on the website is beyond me). It transpires that what I suspected all along is correct - there is something wrong with these modems - they need a firmware upgrade. Plugged it in, no joy - not picked up by the Bewan router. I thought "great, it doesn't work on my Vista machine, so I'll plug it into this then all PCs on my network can access the net through it if the DSL goes down".
The Bewan has a USB slot into which you can plug a 3G modem to use as backup if/when the DSL fails. Last month, I got Vodafone fixed broadband in the house, and got a Bewan router with that. As stated above, I even completely reformatted the machine with the original disk and tried installing on it - no joy. I spent an hour onto support removing software, reinstalling software, rebooting, removing DVD software, rebooting etc.
I bought this modem on the 31st Oct last year and was told there was a bad batch of them, but mine wasn't one of those. Got RAS error 608 on one, the other kept crashing when I ran the VMC software and tried to connect. Unlike you both, mine has worked on XP from day one (laptop and desktop), but I've tried it on two Vista laptops with no joy. This USB stick quite honestly seems to be a complete piece of crap.
